These sites were selected to provide access to photographs, historical
images and fine art images. This collection does not focus on clip art or
graphics.
AP Images Associated Press photos from the 1840s to the present. Easy to use for ages 10 and up. (Available outside the library with a Timberland Regional Library card.)
eLibrary Search for photographs by leaving only the picture option checked on the Elibrary home page. Elibrary contains over one million images from magazines, newspapers, art publications, and other sources. (Available outside the library with a Timberland Regional Library card.)
AltaVista Photo Finder One of the most comprehensive database of images on the Web; includes the Corbis photo database.
Ditto.com A visual search engine that allows users to navigate through the web using pictures rather than text. Ditto’s motto: "see the web."
Google Image According to Google, "The most comprehensive image search on the web."
Image Finder An index to image sites on the Web, including Library of Congress and the Smithsonian.
KidsClick Image Search Tools A directory of 18 search engines combined on one page for kids. Divided into categories of animals, art, astronomy/space, and history/society.
Lycos Picture Gallery Browse or search over 80,000 images and illustrations. To use the image search engine, select the "images and video" tab in the Lycos Search area at the top of the page.
Yahoo! Narrow your search to photography results by adding the word “photograph” to your search terms (ex: “dog photograph”). You can also search for images that are a specific size or from a specific website by using the “advanced search” option, which can be found directly to the right of the yellow image search button.
Airliners.net Over 9,000 photos of commercial airliners, military aircraft, classic and historic airplanes, helicopters, accidents, airplane interiors and airports.
American Memory A variety of searchable photo collections from the national Library of Congress, including: historic American architecture, baseball cards, women's suffrage, jazz legends, World War II, vaudeville, and more.
Archive of Early American Images Brown University’s historical images database of the colonial Americas between 1492 and 1825
British Library Images Online A wonderful site with thousands of images from the British Library collection. The site includes a subject index and a title index in addition to the usual search options
Catalog of Spaceborne Imaging: Planetary Image Archives Over 500 images of the solar system, organized by planet and space mission
Hillman’s Wonders of the World Images and descriptions of the top 100 wonders of the world according to travel authority Howard Hillman
Ibiblio’s "photo of the day" directory Ibiblio’s "photo of the day" directory, with links to newspapers, magazines, and wire services.
Images of American Political History A collection of over 500 public domain images of American Political History from the College of New Jersey’s "Teaching Politics" site.

National Aeronautics & Space Administration’s (NASA) Image eXchange Over 300,000 NASA images.

Sports Illustrated Pictures SIPictures.com contains an archive of thousands of current and historical sports imagery from around the globe.
Jones Photo Collection Photos from the three centuries capture life in the Olympic Peninsula with more than 85,000 prints and 175,000 negatives. All aspects of life were chronicled by the Jones family of photographers from loggers to nurses, teachers to tribal chiefs and milestones throughout Northwest Washington state.
MOHAI Historical Photo Database Photos from the Museum of History and Industry, covering Seattle, King County and Washington State.
Seattle Municipal Archives Photograph Collection Index to over 28,000 records; digital images are available for about 90% of the records.

Stock.XCHNG Free stock photography site that allows anyone to share their work. Currently contains over 249,852 large, high quality photos.
Earth Science World Image Bank Over 6,000 earth science images. Can browse by categories such as volcanoes, weather, lakes, and minerals, or search by category, location, and/or keyword.
Geo-Images Project The Geo-Images project was designed by the University of California Berkeley to provide access to images (mostly photographs) that are useful in teaching geography.
Images Canada "The gateway to images of Canadian events, people, places and things!" Site may be accessed in English or French.
TerraServer.com (Requires a Java-enabled browser.) Database of aerial photographs and satellite images. Current coverage is mainly the U. S. and parts of Europe with other scattered areas of the world.
Animal Pictures Archive More than 15,000 animal photographs.
ARKive: Images of Life on Earth Images, video, and and sound recordings of over 15,000 species currently threatened with extinction. There are three distinct ARKive sites: one for general users, one for educators, and one for children.
Freshwater and Marine Image Bank University of Washington’s digital collection has over 15,000 images of fish, shellfish, and marine mammals, pictures of fish hatcheries and dams and vessels, materials related to polar exploration, regional and traditional fisheries, and limnological (freshwater) subjects.
US Fish and Wildlife Service Digital Library System The Fish and Wildlife Service's collection of public domain still photos. You can search by keyword or browse collections that are organized by geographic location and subject.
American Museum of Photography A "museum without walls," changing exhibits feature masterworks, historical photos, early daguerreotypes and current art photography.
American Photography: a Century of Images An excellent interactive site created by the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) that explores the history of photography. Site is divided into categories of art, photography and war, digital truth, presidential imagemaking, advertising and persuasion, social change, and cultural identity.
Artcyclopedia "A guide to great art on the internet." Includes over 180,000 images of mostly paintings and sculpture.
Getty Photo Study Collection Over two million photographs covering Western art, architecture, and decorative arts from antiquity to modern times.
Imagebase Searchable database of the collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Contains over 82,000 images!
Images from the History of Medicine The National Library of Medicine has created this database of over 60,000 images. "The collection includes portraits, pictures of institutions, caricatures, genre scenes, and graphic art in a variety of media, illustrating the social and historical aspects of medicine."
Index of Medieval Medical Images (IMMI) The Index of Medieval Medical Images includes medieval manuscript images (up to the year 1500) with medical components held in North American collections.
Public Health Image Library (PHIL) An extensive set of photographs, illustrations, and multimedia files related to public health. Database was created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Finding Images on the Web tutorial Another tutorial site created by the Boston University Libraries. This tutorial covers topics such as downloading images, inserting images into documents, and dealing with copyright in addition to providing lists of visual resource sites
Finding Images Online tutorial A great tutorial with concise instructions on how to search for pictures, photos, and other image resources on the internet. Includes comprehensive lists of visual resource websites in a variety of categories, including art, history, geography, sports, science, and technology. Site was created by the UK’s Technical Advisory Service for Images.
