Community Libraries & Cooperative Library Centers

Timberland Regional Library has 27 community libraries, 5 cooperative library centers, and 2 library kiosks in Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, and Thurston counties in Southwest Washington State. 

• The Administrative Service Center and Central Reference Service are located in Tumwater.

Cooperative Library Centers

Timberland provides public library collections and service in 5 cooperative library centers in 4 local school districts and in the Shoalwater Bay Tribal Library.  Service began at the Shoalwater Bay Tribal Library on July 5, 2005.

Background:  In 2001, Timberland began providing public library collections and service in seven cooperative library centers in partnership with Educational Service District 113 and seven local school districts.  The Cooperative Library Centers were made possible by a federal 21^st Century Community Learning Center grant awarded to Educational Service District 113 to expand learning opportunities and reduce social obstacles to learning.

ESD 113, headquartered in Olympia, applied for the grant in 2000 on behalf of seven school districts:  Rochester in Thurston County, Mary M. Knight in Mason County, North River in Pacific County, Taholah and Wishkah in Grays Harbor County, and Boistfort and Adna in Lewis County.  

The grant funds purchased library materials (books, videos, CDs, DVDs, magazines) and computers to be used by the public and staff.  The computers have access to the Internet, many online magazine, newspaper, and reference databases, and the complete TRL library collection so that patrons can place holds on any items in Timberland.  Timberland delivers materials to cooperative library centers for patrons to pick up and patrons can return library materials at any location.  TRL trains local staff and volunteers in how to run a library center.  

Adna School in Lewis County has a drop box for returning library materials; Adna does not have a library collection.

Rochester School District and Taholah Schools withdrew from the project at the end of the grant funding.

Library Kiosks

Timberland provides a library kiosk in two locations:  Rochester Community Center and the Hawks Prairie Center of South Puget Sound Community College.  The kiosks are equipped with two computer stations.  One computer provides access to the TRL library catalog, web site, and reference databases.  The second computer allows patrons to check out their holds that have been delivered to the Hawks Prairie Center.
